Abstract

Addressing Political Inequality by Restoring the Civic Mission of Higher Education

This article argues that embedding political learning into the entire undergraduate experience satisfies the civic mission of higher education.  Further, institutions that serve under-represented, historically marginalized students have an opportunity to combat political and social inequality by preparing students to be active and engaged citizens.  College campuses must foster a culture of caring and mutual respect to provide a support-system for students trying to complete a degree while facing challenging life situations.
